Why Charleston Gutters Clog So Fast

Live oaks drop leaves in spring, not fall, and they keep shedding small leaves, catkins and moss all year. Add pine needles, which slide past most gutter guards and mat together in the trough, and the pollen that coats everything in March and April. Then the summer thunderstorms arrive, an inch or two of rain in an hour, and a gutter that is half full of wet leaves simply overflows.

Water that spills over the front edge soaks the fascia board behind the gutter and rots it. Water that runs down the wall streaks the siding and feeds mildew. Water that lands in the beds below washes out mulch, drowns plants and pools against the foundation or the crawl space vents. On raised homes it runs down the pilings and stains the slab underneath. A clogged downspout can also back water up under the shingles at the roof edge, which is where leaks start.

2. Clear the gutters by hand. Leaves, needles, shingle grit and the mud that forms underneath are scooped out of every run, not just the ones you can see from the street.
3. Flush the downspouts. Each downspout is run with water until it drains clear. Clogs at the elbow or at the ground are cleared, not just pushed down the pipe.
4. Check the flow. We watch each run drain and note any sagging sections, loose hangers or seams that leak, and tell you about them.
5. Rinse the mess. The siding, windows and walks below are rinsed, so you are not left with a line of wet debris down the wall.
6. Photos. Before and after photos from the roof edge are sent to you. You do not need to be home.

Gutter Brightening for the Black Stripes

The black and gray stripes on the outside of aluminum gutters, often called tiger striping, are not dirt. They are oxidation that forms where rainwater runs over the lip and down the face. Pressure will not remove them. We treat the gutter faces with a cleaner made for oxidized aluminum, agitate, and rinse, and the gutters come back to white. Brightening is an add-on to a gutter cleaning or a house wash, and it makes a bigger difference to curb appeal than most people expect.

How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned in Charleston?

Twice a year for most homes: once after the spring oak drop, around May, and once in late fall after the pines and the remaining hardwoods finish. Homes under heavy tree cover, in older neighborhoods downtown, in West Ashley or in Mount Pleasant's Old Village, often need a third visit. Homes with no trees nearby can get by with one. If you see water spilling over the edge during a storm, or plants growing in the gutter, it is overdue.
