West Ashley was Charleston's first big suburb. Many of the neighborhoods closest to the Ashley River, like Avondale, Byrnes Downs, Windermere and Westwood, were built in the decades after World War II. That means plenty of brick ranches, painted wood trim, older concrete driveways and carports. Brick is porous and holds mildew and algae in its pores and mortar joints, which turns the shady side of a house green or black.
